   ROYAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION COURSES

As one of over 2,000 Training Centres located throughout the world, Island Watersports Lanzarote is proud to have attained the required accreditation to offer  high quality tuition of a range of RYA courses.  RYA qualifications are highly regarded and emulated worldwide in both the recreational and commercial spheres of boating.

Island Watersports' principal and owner, Norman Sparrow, has over 35 years experience in powerboating areas and looks forward to welcoming you 'on board' for an enjoyable and fun-filled course.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 1 COURSE  -  Duration 1 day  -  Course Fee: 250 Euros
This is a 1 day course which provides a practical and theoretical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. No previous experience is required. The minimum age for candidates is 12 years, and those under the age of 16 years will be issued with an endorsed certificate.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE (Coastal)  -  Duration 2 days  -  Course Fee: 425 Euros
A 2 day course, in both theory and practical sessions, which teaches boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. This is a more in-depth course and provides the student with the knowledge for self-sufficient powerboating at a basic level. Whilst no previous experience is necessary, this course may be preceded by Level 1. The minimum age for candidates is 12 years, and those under the age of 16 years will be issued with an endorsed certificate.

Note: Level 2 is also a pre-requisite for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence), for which a separate application can be made to the RYA upon successful completion of the course.

RYA INTERMEDIATE POWERBOAT COURSE  -  Duration 2 days  -  Course Fee: 450 Euros
This is a 2 day course which covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.  A good standard of theory is required before commencing this course.  It is recommended that candidates have undertaken the Level 2 Course (coastal) and are in possession of a valid First Aid Certificate and VHF Radio Operators Certificate.  The minimum age for candidates is 16 years.

RYA ADVANCED POWERBOAT COURSE  -  Duration 2 days and 1 night  -  Course Fee: 550 Euros
This course is carried out over 2 days, including a night passage, and is designed for leisure and professional boaters wishing to undertake more adventurous trips in small powerboats. It will provide you with the ability to plan and execute coastal passages, including the return to a familiar port by night. As this is a more demanding course, it is recommended that candidates have a knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of RYA Day Skipper Shorebased certificate, have undertaken the Intermediate Powerboat Course, and are in possession of a valid First Aid Certificate and VHF Radio Operators Certificate. The minimum age for candidates is 17 years.

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE (ICC)  -  Duration half a day
Island Watersports is recognised by the RYA as a training centre to carry out the test for the International Certificate of Competence (coastal and power categories). The test comprises practical and theory elements, and can either be carried out in our own craft (7.5 metre RIB) or your own craft (subject to satisfying certain criteria).

Cost: 225 Euros (carried out in the training centre RIB)
175 Euros (carried out in a boat owned by the candidate)

Please note that only British citizens or UK residents are eligible to apply for the ICC.
A maximum of 3 candidates will be catered for on each course.
All RYA course fees are inclusive of G20/96 powerboat logbook and relevant certificate.

THE MARINE RADIO SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE  -  Duration 1 day  -  Course Fee: 150 Euros
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF Radiotelephone fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. If you own a marine radio, whether a handheld or fixed set, you are required by law to hold an operator's licence. Learn the procedures for operation and gain the qualification on this one day examined course. No pre-course knowledge or experience is required. The course fee is inclusive of the exam.

BASIC NAVIGATION AND SAFETY COURSE  –  Duration 2 days  –  Course Fee: 300 Euros
This course is an integral part of the overall cruising scheme range of courses run by the RYA and is an essential building block of knowledge for those wishing to progress to the RYA practical courses. The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the basic skills required before taking a small boat to sea, or taking an active part in running a boat. Subjects covered include charts, buoyage, navigation, safety, anchoring, tides, electronic navigation, rules of the road (IRPCS), weather forecasts, pilotage and passage planning. Although this is a 2 days course, the duration can be split into a number of hourly modules to suit the student’s needs.
